Now comes the TRANSFORMATION stage. All the work you've done in the previous stages leads here to a new way of being and doing in retirement.

What does transformation look like in retirement?

Most people think of transformation as dramatic, a huge lifestyle change, a reinvention of identity, something external and obvious. But in Retire With IMPACT, I describe transformation as something more grounded, methodical and coordinated. Here’s what real transformation often looks like:

  • Waking up with certainty and direction
  • Letting go of roles or identities that no longer serve you
  • Feeling free to say yes and to say no
  • Living in tune with your values and energy
  • Responding to life rather than reacting to it
  • Making decisions from a place of confidence, not fear

It’s the moment when retirement stops being something you have to manage and becomes something you choose to shape.

Internal change, external shift

In this stage, transformation takes place internally and externally. Examples of internal change include beliefs, behaviours, energy, emotion, and identity, and examples of external change include relationships, choices, habits, and professional direction. I’ve seen this with clients:

  • Someone updates their beliefs and starts leading a new kind of life.
  • Someone reclaims their energy, and their relationships improve.
  • Someone lets go of a long-held story and suddenly sees new opportunities everywhere.

That’s the power of inside-out transformation. You don’t just do retirement differently. You experience it differently, too.

What helps transformation stick?

Here’s what I know from years of coaching and therapy work:

  • You need patterns of thought, behaviour, feeling and relating that reinforce change, not fight it
  • You need support that believes in your new version, not your old one
  • You need tools that work on your worst days, not just your best ones
  • You need to befriend your Emotional Self, not ignore them
  • You need the ongoing ability to return to my IMPACT Model whenever new challenges arise

That last one is key: transformation isn’t one-and-done. Life keeps changing, and my Model can remain a constant companion. You might revisit MEANING when something unexpected happens, or you might go back to CHALLENGE when things stagnate. Retire With IMPACT offers a framework and process that adapts and grows with you.

You don’t become someone new. You become more of who you are.

Retirement doesn’t ask you to trade in your past. It invites you to bring it forward, filtered, refined, and reimagined. In the TRANSFORMATION stage, what’s changed most is your relationship with yourself. You’re not pushing or avoiding. You’re guiding. Responding. Creating. And now, you’re building a life that fits, not one you’re trying to squeeze into.

This is what it means to Retire With IMPACT

To Retire With IMPACT means to go through a psychological process that enables you to retire successfully. Whatever that means for you.
