Upgrading Existing Conversations
Which Conversations Need Upgrading?
If, after completing your Questionnaires for all of your conversations, you can see that some are not yet making the difference you are after in retirement but have the potential to do so, these are the ones to upgrade into Conversations With IMPACT. Again, remember to include the conversations with yourself.
Your Questionnaire results will show you where progress is limited or where misunderstandings and frustration are common. These are your priority conversations for change.
Questions to Reflect On:
Which conversations leave me unclear or unheard?
What patterns repeat without resolution?
Where am I avoiding a conversation altogether?
Strategies for Upgrading Conversations
Clarify purpose: Before starting, define what you want from the conversation. Is it understanding, agreement, reassurance, or action? This helps prevent circular discussions.
Use the Questionnaires as a neutral guide: Refer to specific responses rather than opinions, e.g., “We both scored this area lower; what might help improve it?“
Adjust approach: If a face-to-face exchange tends to escalate, try a written reflection, shared journal, or structured email exchange. Writing allows both sides to slow down and think clearly.
Change the timing or setting: Move discussions to a more neutral space or calmer time of day. A walk, a coffee shop, or a shared activity can change the tone and energy.
Strategies for Upgrading Conversations
Introduce curiosity:
Replace assumptions with open questions such as “What’s most important to you about this?” or “What would help us move forward?“
Seek support:
If the same difficulties persist, consider inviting a neutral person, such as a trusted friend, colleague, or retirement coach, to facilitate the conversation.
Apply self-reflection:
Use journalling or short recorded reflections to identify unhelpful self-talk or conversations and practise reframing them.
Track changes:
After each upgraded conversation, note what felt different, the tone, understanding, or outcome. Use this feedback to refine your approach next time.
Upgrading conversations means transforming them from reactive or repetitive exchanges into Conversations with impact. Each improvement, however small, strengthens your communication and supports your retirement journey. No matter how challenging these conversations may be at present, investing in upgrading them will definitely be worthwhile.
